Currently, the social network is developing super fast and the number of social network users is countless. They often have the habit of sharing information or products they like on social networks. Therefore, to advertise a website effectively, social network icons are an indispensable element. The best place for you to place social network icons is at the foot of the page. Because placing them at the top or the middle of the page will lose customers’ focus on the products and services you provide. Hence, the Footer is an appropriate choice for social networking icons that does not cause loss of concentration, making the website more clear and beautiful.

It would be great if these icons are SVGs because they are vector images and they will look sharper. In addition, when they are SVG, you will find them beneficial because the file size will be smaller. However, there is one issue that we need to solve. The browser frequently requests each image individually so that it takes a great deal of time to load all of them. This leads to the speed of loading page also be slow down. This post provides you with a solution to deal with that problem. It tells about how to minimize file requests by using includes for SVGs. Follow this article and you will find that nothing can bother you anymore.

Minimize file requests by using includes for SVGs

Embed the SVG directly in the HTML

In fact, SVG is an XML format. Hence, to solve the above problem, you just need to embed it directly in the HTML:

<html>
  <body>
    <svg width="100" height="100">
      <circle cx="50" cy="50" r="40" stroke="green" stroke-width="4" fill="yellow" />
    </svg>
  </body>
</html>

After you’ve done this, I’m sure that the requests will no longer exist.

Create a case statement with all the social icons

In this step, you will have a case statement with all the social icons that you might want to display them at the Footer of your site. To do this, create a file _includes/social-icon.html firstly. Then, you can use the script below to add in:

{% case include.icon %}
  {% when "Facebook" %}
    <svg class="facebook" fill="#000000" height="24" viewBox="0 0 24 24" width="24" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><path d="M19,4V7H17A1,1 0 0,0 16,8V10H19V13H16V20H13V13H11V10H13V7.5C13,5.56 14.57,4 16.5,4M20,2H4A2,2 0 0,0 2,4V20A2,2 0 0,0 4,22H20A2,2 0 0,0 22,20V4C22,2.89 21.1,2 20,2Z" /></svg>

Display the icon you expect

You’ve had a case statement with all the icons. Whenever you want one of them to be displayed on your site, call the include and pass it right away. For example, if I want to have a Facebook icon on my site, I would type the code:

{% include social-icon.html icon="Facebook" %}

Style the icon

In case you want to customize the icon to be more specific and interesting, you can style them with the CSS. Below is an example about making the icon white and put it in a blue circle:

svg {
  width: 25px;
  height: 25px;
  padding: 10px;
  border-radius: 50px;
  background: blue;
  fill: white;
}

Summary

This writing has brought you some of the incredible things you could do to minimize file requests by using includes for SVGs. Especially, there are some tips for you to make the icons look cool and special. With this post, hope you will avoid some complicated requests and get comfortable. What’s more, hope that you’ve had a great time following this instruction to suit your needs.
